Log Building Basics - 2nd - 8th September
Course outline
Welcome to our second year of teaching Scandinavian roundwood log building where we will notch logs on a small sauna.We will cover the following:- Practical and theoretical introduction to roundwood scribing and log cabin building using both traditional and modern tools
- Making friends with the axe and the chainsaw
- Safety considerations
- Log selection and preparation
- Point foundations
- Initial layout
- Structural considerations
- Wall construction
- Door and window reveals
- Theoretical introduction to roofing geometry and construction
- Suggested projects for further work and practice
- Sauna basics

£700 for 7 days including camping and dinner
There are 6 places on each course.Concessions for low wage participants available on request.To book a place, please write a short description of yourself, your skills and experience. This year I am offering the opportunity to stay on and work with me on the sauna in exchange for the course fee. This is available to someone with relevant woodworking experience. Green woodworkers and timber framers are encouraged to apply. The rate at which you pay back the course fee is dependent on your experience and production. The courses all take place in the field of a local housing coop on the outskirts of Llanbrynmair near Machynlleth. Full address provided to course participants. We will be working under cover.Camping and dinner is provided by Norwegian Wood. We will eat together in the house each evening. Please bring your own breakfast and lunch for the week. If a soft bed and central heating is more your bag there are of B&B options nearby.There are train links to Machynlleth from anywhere in the UK. From there it’s a half hour bike ride to Llanbrynmair.
